Since 1701 - the oldest Fraternal Society in Kelso
On Tuesday 9th June, members of Lodge Kelso & Tweed visited Poynder Apartments to present a cheque to Julie Houghton, who leads the OPAL service. It was a wonderful afternoon, with Brethren spending time meeting residents, taking part in games, and discussing the Lodge’s charitable work.
Eildon’s Extra Care Housing development at Poynder Apartments in Kelso provides onsite care and support services for people aged 60 and over. Through the OPAL service, Julie organises a wide range of social activities, including gentle chair exercises, quizzes, games, guest speakers, arts and crafts, and music sessions.
The Lodge’s donation will help support a new gardening project, as well as provide equipment for indoor activities. As Julie explained, “Many of those who live in the building have had to leave their gardens behind, and we are aiming to create a space that offers both therapeutic activity and a touch of beauty.”

One resident, Jim, spends a great deal of time tending the garden, which has had a hugely positive impact on his wellbeing. The raised-bed allotment stands as a testament to his dedication and hard work. Jim’s next ambition is to add a greenhouse, helping the project continue to flourish.

Seeing first-hand the difference that fundraising can make was a truly rewarding experience for all involved. The residents were also delighted to hear that, on our next visit, Brother Gordon Brown will be bringing along his accordion to provide an afternoon of music and entertainment.
